Improvement Toolkit / Value Stream Mapping

What is Value Stream Mapping?

Your Value Stream Map (VSM) is a representation of the flow of materials from supplier to customer through your organisation as well as the flow of information.

This enables you to see at a glance where the delays are in your process, any restraints and excessive inventory.

Your current state map is the first step in working towards your future state for your organization.

5 Tips for creating a Value Stream Map

  1. Value stream mapping (VSM) is a team exercise and should involve representatives from all of the areas within the process being mapped.
  2. This process should be facilitated and led by an expert with experience in creating Value Stream Maps.
  3. A Value Stream Map should be created by hand. It is better to create by hand and involve the entire team to ensure everyone has a full understanding.
  4. Once the initial map (current state) has been created, a future state (blue sky) should be developed, then an action plan can be formulated to close the gap between current state and future state,
  5. Sometimes, especially if major changes are required, several progressive maps can be developed to create ‘milestones’ on the journey to your ‘blue sky’ future state.
